Mathematics Gender Discrimination

“A woman's guess is much more accurate than a man's certainty.”

“If women are expected to do the same work as men, we must teach them the same things.” ------ Plato

Mathematical biasness towards gender is not new to human. Parents and teacher think male child are more intelligent than female child in mathematics. Teacher gives more marks to male student than female student even though they are equally talented. Experiments have been carried out to bring the proof forward of early-bias of teacher towards male student.

In a study marks of math papers are compared, when teachers were aware of gender of students and when teachers were not aware of the gender of students. The outcome of study surprised researchers. When teachers were not aware of student genders, the girl child performed better than male child. Gender biasness in mathematics are summarized below.

  1. Like in other area, girl student faces gender discrimination.

  2. Teacher think that male student mathematical reasoning is better than female student.

  3. There is no scientific backing of this type of discrimination.

  4. Gender biasness starts from school days.

  5. Math teacher gives less marks to girl child.

  6. Female student morally becomes suppressed and faces performance barrier in future studies.

  7. If teacher were unaware of student gender, then girl child did performance comparable to boy’s child and in some cases even better.

  8. So we are losing future woman mathematician.

  9. Very few female prefer mathematics as main topics in post graduate studies.

  10. Encouragements from family, society, academia, government are required to reduce this discrimination then we will have great woman future mathematician.
